The Waiting on Wednesday concept is a weekly feature of the Breaking the Spine blog. It's a great way to share information about a forthcoming title that is on my radar screen with other readers.

From barnesandnoble.com:
Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the
families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old,
decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept
Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the
sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. Helped by Rigger (a bad boy turned
good who is handy around the house) and Orla, her niece (a whiz at
business), Chicky is finally ready to welcome the first guests to Stone
House’s big warm kitchen, log fires, and understated elegant bedrooms.
John, the American movie star, thinks he has arrived incognito; Winnie
and Lillian are forced into taking a holiday together; Nicola and Henry,
husband and wife, have been shaken by seeing too much death practicing
medicine; Anders hates his father’s business, but has a real talent for
music; Miss Nell Howe, a retired schoolteacher, criticizes everything
and leaves a day early, much to everyone’s relief; the Walls are
disappointed to have won this second-prize holiday in a contest where
first prize was Paris; and Freda, the librarian, is afraid of her own
psychic visions.
Sharing a week with this unlikely cast of characters is pure joy, full of Maeve’s trademark warmth and humor. Once again, she embraces us with her grand storytelling.

My thoughts: Maeve Binchy, a beloved Irish novelist, created memorable characters and interesting contemporary situations in her numerous novels, beginning with Light a Penny Candle in 1982. I have read and enjoyed many of her books, which are set in her homeland. I was saddened by her death last year, and the loss of a gifted writer. It is a delightful surprise to have one last novel from a talented storyteller.

I've only read one Book by Maeve Binchy, Tara Road...it's been at least 6,7 years, but I remember enjoying it. Great pick :)
ReplyDeleteHere's my WoW.
I enjoyed Tara Road also. If you are interested in reading another Maeve Binchy novel before A Week in Winter is released, I recommend Circle of Friends, one of her older novels, and my personal favorite.
DeleteBy the way, I checked out your WoW pick and was intrigued by its description. Trilogies are my favorite fiction format. You won't have too much longer to wait until your WoW book arrives to bring your trilogy to closure. Enjoy!!
I'm not familiar with this book or this author. Thanks for sharing them both with me.
ReplyDeleteCheck out my WOW.

Hope you'll get the chance to explore some of Maeve Binchy's novels, including my personal favorite, Circle of Friends.
ReplyDeleteI took a look at your WoW book and it is one that I will definitely be recommending to other readers.
Thanks for taking the time to comment!
I am looking forward to this one too although a little bittersweetly knowing it is her last book.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly! Although we can always hope that a few unpublished manuscripts are discovered.
