First Chapter ~ First Paragraph

It's Tuesday . . . time for . . .

First Chapter ~ First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, now hosted by Vicki at I'd Rather Be At The Beach, where bloggers post the first paragraph(s) of a book they are currently reading or planning to read sometime soon.

Today I'm featuring an upcoming read, The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai.  The excerpt shared is from a trade paperback version I purchased.

1985

Twenty miles from here, twenty miles north, the funeral mass was starting.  Yale checked his watch as they walked up Belden.  He said to Charlie, "How empty do you think that church is?"

Charlie said, "Let's not care."

What do you think?  Would you continue reading?
This novel has been nominated for several--and won at least one--major book award.  I heard the author speak at an awards dinner during this year's American Library Association conference in Washington, D.C.  She was mesmerizing, and one of the first things I did when I returned from the conference was buy a copy of this book.
